Creative Calling by Chase Jarvis

This is an especially great book for young creatives or people who are new to a creative practice.

Creative Calling argues that being creative is an important part of designing a happy and healthy life. “Creative expression is as important to health as exercise and mindfulness”, Jarvis says. If you bottle up your creativity, he warns, there’s a good chance you’ll become jaded and unhappy.

For me, someone who has - while not always perfectly (no doubt) - been pursuing a creative practice for nearly my entire life, it was nice to revisit some important lessons. I especially appreciated Mr. Jarvis’ reminder to forge ahead, be consistent and to never back down.

One of my favorite takeaways is the proof he offers that the more work a person produces - even without much forethought - will result in higher quality work. This might seem counterintuitive at first, but it does make sense that practice produces quality.
